"(…) Even if one could state the value of any one gift at the moment, those values will change; in a century’s time very possibly, they will have changed completely. Moreover, in a hundred years, I thought, reaching my own doorstep, women will have ceased to be the protected sex. Logically they will take part in all activities and exertions that were once denied them."
Excerpt from A room of one's own by Virginia Woolf
Inês Paiva is a musician and teacher from Portugal. She started her music studies at Conservatório Regional Maria Campina, Faro, Portugal, when she was nine years old. Her instrument has been the flute since the very beginning of her studies, but she has since developed her piano skills and invested in her singing techniques by being part of several choirs and participating in multiple masterclasses and workshops. Her flute studies began with flautist Luís Miguel Garcia, the principal flautist of Orquestra Clássica do Sul, finishing her secondary studies at the conservatoire with flautitst João Lourenço, currently teaching at Conservatório de Música de Loulé.
After applying for her bachelor degree in 2018, she started her bachelor studies at the University of Évora, Portugal, with flautist Monika Streitová, researcher of CESEM, INET-MD and Assistant Professor of the University of Évora. During this time, she participated in several festivals, including FLAUTUÉ and FLAUTUENCONTRO, and masterclasses part of the university, having had the opportunity to premiere Monólogo I by Gonçalo A. Rodrigues and to participate in several ensembles and projects like the II Historical Soundscapes Meeting. She graduated in 2021, starting her master studies at the Malmö Academy of Music with Prof. Dr. Anders Ljungar-Chapelon. She completed her master’s degree at the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts – Lund University, Sweden, in 2023, played with the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, and since then has also concluded an Independent Course on Interpretation in 2024. Her thesis Women in music: are they absent from Western Music History? focused on women and gender equality, which she expects to develop more in the future.
Currently and actively involved in several different projects and ensembles in Malmö, she has had the opportunity to participate in several different projects and collaborations outside of the educational background. One of this ensembles is the Reaktion! Ensemble part of the Connect Festival where new written music is premiered yearly. Women in Society is an interdisciplinary project which she both produced and played in May 2024 in collaboration with the visual artist Sílvia Ferreira and the composer Gonçalo A. Rodrigues. Mindful Image and Unique Beauty is an undergoing project where she is both a producer and player with Natalie Schäfer, producer and composer. She is also a member of the Lunae Duo, 2ofHeartsDuo and Lumis Ensemble. Besides these projects and ensembles, she also joined the Malmö Akademiska Kör in Malmö. Work wise, she is currently teaching voice at Rockskolan in Malmö, Staffanstorp, and Lund, and teaching flute, voice and piano at Akademiska Musikskolan in Lund. She also teaches privately, both in person and online.
Her journey through music has taken a turn since the beginning of her studies, but she has always stayed true to her own motivations as an artist: to create and promote new music; to develop her own relationship with the flute by dedicating her studies mainly to contemporary music; and to contribute as much as possible to a music world where one can find more freedom, inclusivity and gender equality.
